WIth the holidays comes a winding down of sorts as email transitions from a torrent to a trickle and commutes to the office are exchanged for family time with an unhealthy dose of phone fidgeting.
It means more time with the kids too. Which has led to a few new observations about how my world…
When I was 14 my friends and I made videos all the time using whatever cameras (8MM to VHS) and VCRs. This is 20 years ago. Out of the 400 or so kids in my grade back then, I’d say 50 or more were doing the same thing. What you’re seeing isn’t as much new as it’s just finally getting recognized and embraced. Just like before YouTube there was still 1000s of hours of video shot by regular people everyday, it was just locked up. YouTube figured out the formula to release it (using Flash for the videos, not worrying about the bandwidth bill, not trying to be a destination and making it easy for users to put videos wherever they wanted to put them). What’s new is that video making and video expression is now just finally getting to the level that electric guitar was in the 70s. It’s starting to be popular for kids to do. There are now role models for young people to look-up to (all we really had was SNL and MTV). Think about what’s coming just a couple years from now, when 25% of 6-10 year olds are doing what your 14 year old and his peers are doing today.
Air Camera is a clever camera concept by designer Yeon Su Kim that would make that idea a reality. It consists of two components: a ring-like camera worn on the thumb, and a tension-sensing device worn on the forefinger. If the tension unit senses that you’re making a camera gesture, it triggers the camera to snap a photo. Make a video camera gesture, and it begins recording video!

TASCAM’s iM2 turns the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch into a high-quality stereo recorder. A pair of condenser microphones - the same high quality as TASCAM’s best-selling DR-series recorders - plugs into the dock connector of your Apple device.
The microphones are adjustable over 180 degrees for the best sound placement. The uni-directional elements are arranged in an AB pattern for detailed stereo imaging while capturing the ambience of your room.
The iM2 contains its own microphone preamp and analog-to-digital converter for low noise and great audio quality. Unlike mics that use the built-in iPhone preamp, the iM2 can handle up to 125dB sound levels to capture the loudest concerts and instruments without distortion
