WIth the holidays comes a winding down of sorts as email transitions from a torrent to a trickle and commutes to the office are exchanged for family time with an unhealthy dose of phone fidgeting.

It means more time with the kids too. Which has led to a few new observations about how my world…

When I was 14 my friends and I made videos all the time using whatever cameras (8MM to VHS) and VCRs. This is 20 years ago. Out of the 400 or so kids in my grade back then, I’d say 50 or more were doing the same thing. What you’re seeing isn’t as much new as it’s just finally getting recognized and embraced. Just like before YouTube there was still 1000s of hours of video shot by regular people everyday, it was just locked up. YouTube figured out the formula to release it (using Flash for the videos, not worrying about the bandwidth bill, not trying to be a destination and making it easy for users to put videos wherever they wanted to put them). What’s new is that video making and video expression is now just finally getting to the level that electric guitar was in the 70s. It’s starting to be popular for kids to do. There are now role models for young people to look-up to (all we really had was SNL and MTV). Think about what’s coming just a couple years from now, when 25% of 6-10 year olds are doing what your 14 year old and his peers are doing today.
